Prewar Apartment Cleaning on the Upper East Side: Parquet, Radiators and Pets

Parquet that cannot take a wet mop, radiators that bake dust onto the walls, and a dog or cat shedding into all of it. A practical guide to keeping a prewar Upper East Side apartment clean through heat season.

The heat comes on in October, and within a week the wall above the living room radiator has a gray shadow, the parquet by the window looks cloudy, and the cat has left a fine layer of fur on everything the radiator warms. None of that is in your head. Prewar apartment cleaning is a different job from cleaning a newer unit, because the floors, the heat and the dust all behave differently in a building that went up before the war. Add a pet, and the usual spray and mop routine starts doing more harm than good.

This guide covers the three things that make these apartments tricky (parquet, steam radiators and pet hair) and how to schedule help around them. It is written for co op and doorman apartments in Lenox Hill and the East 60s and 70s, and you can see how we work in the neighborhood on our Upper East Side cleaning page.

What Makes Prewar Apartment Cleaning Different

Prewar buildings were built for steam heat, solid plaster and hardwood, and many units still have all three. That is a big part of the appeal, and it is also why a generic cleaning routine falls short. Steam radiators move a lot of warm air upward, which lifts dust and pet dander off the floor and deposits it on walls, sills and the tops of radiator covers. Parquet is made of many small blocks with many seams, so water finds its way in more easily than it does on a single wide board. And older paint can be fragile in ways a newer wall is not.

The homes we clean in the 10021, 10065 and 10075 ZIP codes reflect this. Across 113 jobs, a little over half were recurring, with monthly and three week schedules leading. Most are one bedrooms, with two bedrooms close behind. And the note "I have pets" shows up on bookings about as often as a request for a deep clean, which tells you what these apartments are really dealing with.

If you are still at the stage of comparing prices, our guide to apartment cleaning costs on the Upper East Side breaks that down by size. This post is about the care itself.

Caring for Prewar Parquet Floors

A lot of the damage on old parquet does not come from neglect. It comes from too much water. Flooring makers and wood floor guidance agree on the basics:

  • No wet mop and no steam mop. Standing water and steam push moisture into the seams between blocks, which can lead to whitening, swelling and blocks that lift.
  • Dry first, damp second. A microfiber dust mop or a vacuum on the hard floor setting with no beater bar picks up grit, which acts like sandpaper underfoot.
  • Cleaner on the mop, not the floor. Use a pH neutral hardwood cleaner, mist it lightly onto the microfiber pad, and leave no wet film behind.
  • Skip vinegar, ammonia, oil soap and shine products. Vinegar can wear down a finish, and oily or waxy residue makes future refinishing harder.
  • Know your finish. Prewar floors may carry polyurethane, wax or a patchwork of both after decades of repairs. Test any product in a closet corner first. If it hazes, darkens the wood or leaves residue, stop.

Pets add their own wear. Keep nails trimmed, wipe paws after walks along York or First Avenue, and clean up water bowl splashes and accidents right away, because moisture left on parquet travels into the joints fast. Felt pads under chair legs and a breathable mat under the water bowl prevent many of the scratches and stains people blame on age.

Prewar Radiators and Radiator Covers

New York City heat season runs from October 1 to May 31. During those months, building owners must keep apartments at 68 degrees or more during the day when it is below 55 degrees outside, and at 62 degrees or more overnight. That is eight months of radiators running, and eight months of dust riding the warm air up the wall.

Cleaning them safely comes down to a few rules:

  • Only clean a cool radiator. If you cannot turn the valve yourself, ask the super. Never force a stuck valve.
  • Brush and vacuum, do not spray. A long radiator brush and a vacuum held underneath clear the fins. Liquid sprayed into a radiator promotes rust and can turn to steam when the heat comes back.
  • Clean covers separately. Lift off removable covers, vacuum them, wipe with a barely damp cloth and let them dry fully before they go back.
  • Leave peeling paint alone. In buildings from before 1978, scraping or sanding old paint can release lead dust. If a radiator or cover is flaking, tell the managing agent rather than scrubbing it.
  • Keep the area clear. Clothes, curtains and pet beds piled against a radiator trap dust and block the heat.

Pet Hair and Dander in a Prewar Apartment

Pet allergens are proteins in dander, saliva and skin, not the fur itself, and they settle into rugs, upholstery and dust. They are also stubborn. Research cited by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found that cat allergen can stay elevated for 20 to 30 weeks after a cat leaves a home, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology notes full removal can take six months or longer where there is carpet and upholstered furniture.

That matters whether you share the apartment with a pet or just moved in after someone who did. What actually helps:

  • A vacuum with a HEPA filter or sealed bag, so the dander you pick up does not blow back into the room.
  • Damp dusting instead of dry dusting. A dry cloth or feather duster puts dander back in the air, where radiator heat keeps it moving.
  • Attention to the bedroom. Vacuum the rug and upholstered pieces there more often than anywhere else.
  • Washing pet beds and throws on a regular cycle, and drying them fully.

If you are moving into an apartment where the previous owner had a cat, a deep cleaning on the Upper East Side before your furniture arrives is the easiest time to reach every baseboard, closet floor and radiator back. Our deep cleaning service covers what that reset includes.

How Often to Book Help for a Prewar Apartment With Pets

Most of our recurring clients in the East 60s and 70s land on monthly or three week schedules. That rhythm works when the household keeps up with daily vacuuming and someone wipes the radiator tops between visits. If a dog or cat sheds heavily, or anyone in the home has allergies, every two weeks during heat season usually makes a real difference, since that is when radiators keep dander circulating.

A practical plan for the year:

  • Early October: one deep clean before or just after the heat comes on, radiators and covers included. Deep cleans generally run about $220 to $481 depending on size and condition.
  • October to May: a recurring cleaning on the Upper East Side every two or three weeks. Recurring visits generally fall between $132 and $286.
  • June to September: stretch to monthly if the apartment holds up, since dust drops off once the radiators go quiet.

Building logistics are the other half of the plan. Certificates of insurance, front desk authorization and key access are covered in our guide to hiring a cleaning service in an NYC co op or condo. Set that up once, and every visit after it runs without a call from the lobby.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I steam mop prewar parquet floors?

No. Steam and standing water push moisture into the seams between parquet blocks and can whiten, swell or lift them. Use a dry microfiber mop or a vacuum with no beater bar, then a pH neutral hardwood cleaner misted lightly onto the mop.

Is it safe to clean steam radiators while the heat is on?

Clean radiators only when they are cool. Ask the super about the valve if you cannot turn it yourself, use a brush and a vacuum instead of spraying liquid, and leave any peeling paint alone, since paint in older buildings can contain lead.

How long does cat allergen stay in an apartment after the cat is gone?

Research cited by the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology found cat allergen can stay elevated for 20 to 30 weeks, and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology notes full removal can take six months or more where there is carpet and upholstery. HEPA vacuuming and damp dusting speed it up.

How often should a prewar apartment with pets be cleaned?

Many Upper East Side households do well with visits every three or four weeks. With a heavy shedder or allergies in the home, every two weeks during heat season, October through May, keeps dander from building up.
