You booked the cleaners for nine, you have a call at one, and the question you forgot to ask is whether they will be gone by then. It sounds like a small thing until you are working from the bedroom while someone needs to get into it. A one bedroom deep clean is the most common single reset we do in Midtown, and the answer to how long it takes is less about the apartment's size and more about what has built up since the last real clean, plus how your building lets a crew in and out.
This guide breaks down where the hours actually go in a one bedroom, so you can plan your day, decide whether you need to be home, and know what you are paying for. If you live between Grand Central and the East 50s, our Midtown East cleaning page covers how we work with doorman buildings in the neighborhood.
Why a One Bedroom Deep Clean Takes Longer Than You Expect
A standard clean keeps a maintained home in shape. A deep clean is a reset, and as a rule it runs about twice the time of a standard visit in the same apartment. The extra hours are not spent on the parts you see every day. They go into the places a weekly wipe never reaches: inside the oven, the top of the refrigerator, grout lines, baseboards, door frames, window tracks and the dust that collects behind and under furniture.
That is why the booking pattern here looks the way it does. In ZIP 10022 every one of the 29 jobs we completed was a one time booking, about a third of them included a deep clean, and roughly 65 percent were one bedroom apartments. People in Midtown East tend to call when something specific is coming: a lease ending, a parent visiting, a long stretch of travel just finished. They want one thorough pass, not a schedule.
Across the avenues the apartments are even more uniform. In Hell's Kitchen and Midtown West, across ZIPs 10019, 10036 and 10018, about 85 percent of the 71 jobs we completed were one bedrooms, and 58 percent were one time visits. Same size apartment, very different buildings, and the building is where a lot of the time variation comes from.
Where the Hours Go, Room by Room
In a typical one bedroom, the time splits roughly like this, from the biggest block to the smallest.
The Kitchen
Midtown kitchens are small, and small kitchens concentrate grease. In an older Hell's Kitchen walk up the kitchen is often a narrow galley with cabinets close to the stove, so the film on cabinet fronts, the range hood and the wall behind the burners is heavier than you would think for the size. Inside the oven, inside the refrigerator and the top of the cabinets add up fast. The kitchen is usually the single longest stretch of the day.
The Bathroom
Soap scum on glass, mineral spots on fixtures and grout that has gone gray are slow work no matter how small the room. A bathroom without a window or with a weak exhaust fan takes longer, because buildup sits on every surface.
Radiators, Sills and Window Tracks
Older buildings collect dust in trim and on window ledges, and Midtown adds street grit on top. Radiators are their own job. NYC heat season runs from October 1 to May 31, when landlords must keep apartments at 68 degrees or more during the day when it is below 55 outside, and at 62 or more overnight. Once the heat comes on, warm air lifts dust off the fins and onto everything nearby. Radiators should only be dusted when they are cool, with a brush or vacuum attachment rather than a spray, so a fall deep clean is easier in the morning or early in the season.
Through the Wall Air Conditioners
In a postwar tower in Turtle Bay or along the East Side, there is a good chance the air conditioner sits in a sleeve in the wall. The intake filter behind the front grille gets packed with dust over a summer. The safe routine is to switch the unit off and unplug it, slide the filter out, vacuum it or wash it in warm water with a little dish soap, and let it dry completely before it goes back in. Never spray water into the unit itself. Ask for it when you book if you want it included, so the time is planned for.

How Your Building Changes the Clock
Two identical one bedrooms can take different amounts of time because of what happens before the crew reaches the door.
- Doorman towers in Midtown East and Turtle Bay. Many have a front desk, a package room and a service elevator, and some send vendors through the service entrance. Tell the desk the day before, with the company name, so nobody waits in the lobby. If your building wants a certificate of insurance on file, sort that out before the date.
- Prewar walk ups in Hell's Kitchen. No desk and no elevator, so access depends on you. Leave keys with a neighbor or the super, or plan to buzz the crew in. Equipment goes up the stairs by hand, which adds a few minutes at the start and the end.
- Shared laundry. Plenty of buildings on both sides of town have laundry rooms rather than machines in the unit. If you want bedding changed during the visit, have fresh sheets ready, since a crew cannot run your laundry across the building.
- Live in supers. Some older Turtle Bay buildings have one. They are often the easiest way to arrange access when you cannot be home.
If you are in a walk up between Eighth and Eleventh Avenues, our Hell's Kitchen cleaning page explains how we handle access for buildings without a front desk.
What a One Bedroom Deep Clean Costs in Midtown
Pricing is flat and quoted before you book, based on bedrooms, bathrooms, square footage and the type of clean. For honest budgeting, here is what we see across our homes:
- A standard one bedroom clean: roughly $141 to $230.
- A deep clean: roughly $220 to $481, depending on size and condition.
- Midtown East, ZIP 10022: the median ticket on our completed jobs was about $261, which reflects how many of those bookings were deep cleans.
- Hell's Kitchen and Midtown West: the median ticket was about $173, since more of those visits were standard cleans.

Deep Clean or Move In and Move Out Cleaning?
If you are leaving the apartment, book move in and move out cleaning instead of a deep clean. It is the top add on in Hell's Kitchen for a reason. With the furniture gone, the crew can reach inside every cabinet and closet, behind the stove and refrigerator, and along every baseboard, which is what a landlord walkthrough looks at. Details are on our Hell's Kitchen move in and move out cleaning page.
If you are staying, a few things make the day go faster:
- Clear the counters and the floor of anything you do not want moved. Cleaners clean rather than organize, and clutter adds time.
- Empty the refrigerator of anything expired so the inside can actually be wiped down.
- Tell us about pets, and whether a cat will be hiding under the bed.
- Pick a room to work from if you are home, and have the crew start there so it is done first.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a one bedroom deep clean take?
A deep clean usually runs about twice as long as a standard clean of the same apartment. The kitchen and bathroom take the most time, and buildup, pets and building access can stretch the day. Plan for most of a morning or an afternoon rather than an hour or two.
Do I need to be home during the cleaning?
No. In a doorman building, tell the front desk the day before so the crew is let up, or leave a key at the desk if your building allows it. In a walk up, a neighbor or the super can hold a key.
Can you clean the filter on my through the wall air conditioner?
Yes, if you ask for it when you book. The unit is switched off and unplugged, and the filter is vacuumed or washed in warm soapy water, then left to dry fully before it goes back in. Water is never sprayed into the unit.
Should I book a deep clean or move in and move out cleaning?
If you are staying, a deep clean resets the apartment with your furniture in place. If you are leaving, move in and move out cleaning is built for an empty apartment and covers the inside of every cabinet, closet and appliance that a landlord will check.
